Every Gujarati household has one. Possibly several. Possibly you.
What does kaam chor mean?
Kaam chor breaks down beautifully. Kaam means work. Chor means thief. A kaam chor is, literally and gloriously, a work thief.
Not someone who steals at work. Someone who steals from work. Who takes the labour that was rightfully owed to the household and quietly makes off with it, usually in the direction of the sofa.
English has nothing this good. "Lazy" is just a description. "Slacker" sounds like a compliment from about 1994. Kaam chor accuses you of a crime. There's a victim. Somebody has been robbed, and it was probably your mum.
The word travels
Kaam chor isn't only Gujarati. It works across Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Marathi with the same construction and the same sting, which is why it lands with basically any South Asian family you use it on.
That's fairly common with the good insults. They spread because they're useful, and everybody needs a word for the cousin who disappears the moment the plates come out.
How you'll hear it
Rarely as a calm observation. Kaam chor arrives at volume, usually mid task, usually from a doorway.
It has range. Aimed at a child who's dodged the washing up, it's practically affectionate. Aimed at a grown adult who's been unemployed for eight months and has opinions about how the kitchen should be organised, it is not affectionate at all.
The tell is who's saying it. From a sibling, it's banter. From your mother, mid sigh, while she does the thing you were asked to do forty minutes ago, it's a verdict.
In defence of the kaam chor
Here's our position, and we accept it's self serving.
Doing nothing is underrated. Not the frantic modern version where you lie down and immediately feel guilty about it, but the real thing. Genuine, unbothered, professional grade rest.
Most cultures have quietly decided that being busy is a personality. The kaam chor rejects this entirely. The kaam chor has looked at the washing up and concluded, correctly, that it will still be there later. There is a kind of wisdom in that, and if you disagree, you're probably the one doing the washing up right now.

The correct response to being called one
Do not deny it. Denial requires energy, which rather undermines the position.
The move is to accept the charge entirely and without shame. Yes. Work thief. Caught. What of it.
